Employee Objectives Policy

Defining objectives is a prime way to guide employees along their career paths, motivating them by providing tangible proof of their accomplishments and contributions to the business. This in turn offers benefits to the business in the form of concrete improvements implemented by increasingly skilled staff, creating a mutually beneficial system.

This policy, created by Scott Matteson for TechRepublic Premium, outlines procedures for establishing good objectives and holding employees accountable for completing them.

    Objectives must meet the following criteria:

    Each employee should list at least three objectives but no more than five objectives in a one-year period.

    Progress toward completion will be documented by the employee or team working on the objective, including milestone dates and estimated completion timeframes.

    Objectives should not entail employees having to work more than their standard scheduled hours as these can be performed during regular business operations.

    Partially completed objectives will not be considered successful. Failure to achieve all objectives will be recorded on the employee’s review or performance report and will reduce eligibility for bonuses, increased compensation or other incentives for success.
