Employment Classification Policy

Every organization classifies its workforce according to the nature of their employment. An Employee Classification Policy is necessary for maintaining uniform categorization of employees across an organization, and serves as a blueprint for consistently defining and establishing the classification of employees across a company.

This policy, written by Franklin Okeke for TechRepublic Premium, outlines the various employment classifications often used by organizations and provides guidelines for the proper application of these classifications.

    CRITERIA FOR EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION

Defining the criteria for employee classification is essential to ensuring clarity and consistency in categorizing employees. Criteria can include a combination of factors that help determine an individual’s employment status. For some organizations, these criteria are often included in the employment policy. While criteria may vary based on legal requirements and company-specific needs and location, common factors to consider when classifying employees include:

    Work hours and schedule

Consider the number of hours an employee is expected to work before classifying them. Full-time employees typically work 40 hours per week, while part-time employees work fewer hours. If it is a shift-based job, determine if employees work fixed or rotating shifts, as this can impact their classification.
