Nearly half of Americans, 46%, have had a password stolen in the past year. Out of all the accounts that were breached, more than three-quarters (77%) of those users had their personal information stolen, such as their personal address, credit card number and Social Security Number.

Password attacks on businesses can expose even more critical information: In November 2023, hackers were able to steal the personal and genetic information of 6.9 million people from 23andMe after leveraging stolen account sessions and legitimate log-in credentials.

Clearly, creating strong passwords and storing them securely are more important than ever since Dark Web technology improves and hackers become more skilled with each passing month. However, many people continue to make common password mistakes on both their personal and business accounts, such as choosing an easily guessable password and reusing the same password for multiple accounts.

BE CAREFUL WHEN ENTERING PASSWORDS IN PUBLIC

Entering passwords in public, either on a communal device or over a public Wi-Fi network, creates an extra layer of vulnerability. You should avoid logging into accounts on public devices (such as library computers) whenever possible, and never input any sensitive information, such as your credit card details. You should also be cautious when using a public Wi-Fi network, which is often insecure.

Using a virtual private network can provide some extra layer of protection, but certain websites (including banks) may block you from logging in while using a VPN. Also be aware of who may be looking over your shoulder, and never enter your log-in or financial information where someone might be able to see your password on your screen. Always log out of your accounts when you are finished and make sure the log-in information isn’t saved.
